Cool Spots To Check Out On Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is the biggest island out of the 3 Nusa island cluster, including Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and is only 20km off the coast from Bali. With dreamy white sand beaches and pristine natural sights, there are a ton of things to do on Nusa Penida.

  1. Kelingking Beach

Kelingking beach

Who would want to miss out on this landmark when they are on Nusa Penida? Go to the village of Bunga Mekar, on the southwestern coast of the island and you are at, probably, the most famous site on Nusa Penida. The sight is extremely captivating with the plant-covered limestone rock, resembling the head of a T-Rex, which makes it famous in the first place. Enjoy the fresh sea air and the view of waves crashing against the “giant dinosaur head”!

  1. Angel’s Billabong

Angel's Billabong

Just a short distance from Kelingking Beach is Angel’s Billabong, another magnificent work of mother nature. You will certainly be amazed by the sight of this natural pool with crystal clear water, framed by rock cliffs and an arch. It is possible to swim in the fresh water during low tide. If you want to swim, it may take a bit of effort to time your trip with the tide. The water’s colour also changes during the day, but nonetheless, the unique formation of Angel’s Billabong makes it an incredibly photogenic spot.

Tips: if you want to avoid the crowds, go early and the whole place will be yours to enjoy when others are busy with their breakfast.

  1. Broken Beach

Broken beach

Located about 5 minutes walking from Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach is another must-visit spot on Nusa Penida. The landmark is distinguishing for its giant limestone formation over crashing waves. The unique structure of Broken Beach was the result when the roof of a limestone cave collapsed (we are talking about thousands of years ago). The hole allows the water to flow in during high tide.

The surrounding of Broken Beach is where grey long-tailed macaques call home, while the azure water sees giant manta rays come out to play.

  1. Goa Giri Putri Temple

Giri Putri cave

Already templed-out? Don’t worry because Goa Giri Putri temple is nothing like the temples you have seen on Bali island. Why? Because even its entrance is not something you would expect.

You will have to squeeze through a small crack to get into the temple cave. But the courtyard inside is quite spacious with part of the floorings are covered in white marble. There are 1 praying spot at the entrance and 5 others inside the cave, which is lit up with dim lights.

The decorations in the temple embrace Chinese features like red Chinese lanterns and ornaments. The final praying spot is devoted to Chinese deities such as Guan Yin (Goddess of the Mercy, as well as the god of the earth and sky).

  1. Manta Point

Meet the gentle giants of the sea at the southernmost point of Nusa Penida. This is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Bali. Travelers can encounter these graceful species on almost every dive, along with spotted stingrays and nurse sharks. Other sights to observe underwater are colourful coral reefs and schools of fish.

Most trips depart from the dive resorts on Nusa Lembongan, or from the coasts of Sanur and Padangbai on the Bali mainland. The best season with excellent visibility is from August to October, but travelers can dive here all year-round.
