DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Saigon (D)
You will be met by your tour guide at Saigon’s Tan Son Nhat Airport and transferred to the Hotel to check-in. After that there will be free time until the tour briefing. This will be followed by the Welcome Dinner at a local Vietnamese restaurant.
Overnight in Saigon

Day 2: Saigon – Cu Chi Tunnels (B, L)
After breakfast we explore downtown Saigon (also widely known as Saigon) on cyclo (rickshaw) visiting the poignant War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, some classic French colonial architecture in the forms of Notre Dame Cathedral, the General Post Office and the municipal Theatre as well as one of the city’s main drags Dong Khoi Street ending up down by the Saigon River. We have a light lunch at the renowned Pho 2000 Restaurant (previous visitors include former US president Bill Clinton). This is followed by an afternoon trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, created by the Viet Cong to counter first the French and then American forces. We return to the hotel where the evening is free to explore Saigon’s vibrant nightlife.
Overnight in Saigon

Day 3: Saigon – Cai Be (B, L)
After breakfast we drive the 3 hours out of Saigon to Cai Be in the Mekong Delta. Here we experience a lively floating market where local people buy and sell their produce, mainly fruit and vegetables. After lunch we visit some cottage industries and learn how rice paper, coconut candy, rice popcorn and fish sauce are produced. In the late afternoon we return to dry land and return to Saigon.
Overnight in Saigon

Day 4: Saigon – Fly to Da Nang - Hoian (B, L)
After a breakfast we transfer to Tan Son Nhat airport for a short flight to Da Nang. From here we drive the short distance to our hotel in Hoian, stopping along the way at the Marble Mountains. After lunch we have a walking tour of Hoian’s ancient quarter including the Quan Cong Temple, a Chinese Assembly Hall, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Phung Hung ancestral house. The rest of the day is free to try your hand at shopping – Hoian is famed for its tailors where a whole new wardrobe can be purchased! The evening is free to wander the quiet streets and seek out one of the town’s many inviting restaurants.
Overnight in Hoian

Day 5: Hoian (B, D)
The morning in Hoian is free to shop, relax or explore further. In the late afternoon we will have a fun cooking class the famous Morning Glory restaurant and enjoy the food we have prepared for dinner.
Overnight in Hoian

Day6: Hoian – Hue (B, L)
After breakfast we depart for Hue. This four hour journey by road takes us through some truly breathtaking scenery as we stop at China Beach (where US GIs used to unwind) and Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass with its stunning panoramic views before descending in to Lang Co beach for a coffee break. Upon arrival in Hue we will visit the Citadel and Forbidden Purple City and take a stroll around Dong Ba market.

Day 7: Hue – Hanoi (B, L)
After breakfast we have a half day city tour beginning with a morning cruise on the Perfume River. Our first stop is at the Thien Mu (Heavenly Lady) Pagoda with its characteristic seven tiered tower, not to mention the Austin car which carried Monk Thich Quang Duc to Saigon where he famously set light to himself in 1963 as a dramatic protest against the unfair treatment of Buddhists by the Diem regime. We then drive a short distance to Emperor Tu Duc Mausoleum. This large mausoleum took only 3 years to construct and reflects a mix of Asian and European styles. A vegetarian lunch will be taken in a pagoda or a nunnery and then the remainder of the day is free. In the evening we transfer to the airport for the short flight to the nation’s capital Hanoi. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel.
Overnight in Hanoi

Day8: Hanoi City tour (B, L)
Today we have a full day city tour. We commence at the Ho Chi Minh Complex and the former president’s mausoleum and his simple stilt house residence as well as the One Pillar Pagoda. We continue on to the Temple of Literature, site of Vietnam’s first university and now a temple dedicated to Confucius, followed by the fascinating Museum of Ethnology. Our lunch will be at KOTO (which stands for Know One Teach One) where the staff are former street children now being trained in cookery and hospitality. In the afternoon we weave through Hanoi’s Old Quarter on cyclos and in the evening watch a traditional water puppet show.
Overnight in Hanoi

Day 9: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D)
Enjoy a relaxing day trip to majestic Halong Bay. Our journey through the rice paddies of the Red River Delta takes around 3 ½ hours. En route we stops at a charity centre run by and for the handicapped - the Hong Ngoc Charity center. Upon arrival at the quay side we board our vessel, a luxury traditional junk and begin our cruise through Halong Bay with a delicious seafood lunch. The boat ventures deeper in to the vast bay with breath-taking limestone outcrops and emerald-green waters. We stop at one the bay’s most well known caves. Later there is a steep climb up Titop Mountain where we are rewarded with some stunning panoramic views of Halong Bay. We have dinner and spend the night on board.

Day 10: Halong Bay – Hanoi (B, L)
Wake early for a memorable sunrise over the bay and take a simple breakfast on board. This is followed with the opportunity of kayaking on the bay’s placid waters to gain access to some of the sites not accessible by the larger boats including another cave. We return to our boat for a refreshing lunch before returning to the harbor and our awaiting bus which will return us to Hanoi. We make a stop at the village of Dong Trieu which specializes in ceramics.

Day 11: Depart Hanoi (B)
Breakfast at the hotel and it’s our free time until we transfer to Noi Bai Airport for our flight home.

ABOUT HOTELS:

We, at Indochina Pioneer, are aware that a good tour must have good hotels. As the hotel cost will be the major expense of your vacation in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, it is essential that all of the hotels chosen by us are the highest quality for the price paid. All of our prices are based on twin, double or queen shared rooms.

Below is an explanation of the Hotel Options for this tour:

Boutique & Character hotels ~ Highly recommended (from $50-$80 USD  per room/ per night).
Boutique hotels are not chain-affiliated and feature outstanding design with a  stylish appearance. They usually contain impeccable amenities in a unique setting. This type of hotel usually provides full service accommodation with personal attention. The atmosphere is unique. The term "atmosphere" comprises of decor, ambience, personalized service, mind-set of hotel staff, and most importantly a know-how of how all of these things come together to create a perfect stay.
Boutique & character hotels are good for business, honeymoon, or vacation.

Superior/ 4 star (from US$ 80 - US$ 110/ per room/night)
The 4* superior Hotels offer a wide range of services. Many superior hotels feature a choice of several in-house restaurants. In addition virtually all of them have a swimming pool. Some may even feature a spa or health club. This grade of hotel offers more for your enjoyment and comfort, while still remaining affordable.

Deluxe/ 5 Star (
from US$120 - US$ 180++/ per room/night)
These 5* Deluxe hotels are usually owned by Worldwide, well known Hotel chains. The deluxe hotels feature excellent locations, offer the highest standards of service and facilities, and are known as the best hotels in each region. Facilities such as swimming pools and spas are the norm, and guest rooms are luxurious. These hotels offer first class service and amenities throughout.

2. ACCOMMODATION:
Hotel: We offer 4 categories of accommodation for you to choose from, according to you budget. Our suggestions for hotels are based on our knowledge of the hotel, accommodation type, and the best value for money. However, if you prefer to choose your own hotels, we will be more than happy to accommodate you.  Basically the hotels we choose feature:
Great location.
Beautiful building and façade.
Luxurious and extravagant décor, amenities and equipment.
A variety of restaurants that are trendy, but most importantly good value for money and resistant to changing trends.
An excellent, preferably Les Clefs d’Or, Concierge member or team.
Experienced, knowledgeable and regularly re-trained management and staff.

3. MEALS:
Breakfasts: Breakfasts are always included unless specified.  Breakfasts are usually served buffet style with a good mix of local and international food.

Lunch: There are 8 lunches included on this tour. Meals provided are in Vietnamese fine dining restaurants, allowing you to savor authentic local cuisine at best quality. However, if you are not keen on local food, our tour guides will be more than happy to offer you alternatives for a surcharge. Note: Please advise us if you have any special dietary requirements.

Dinner: There are 4 dinners included on this tour. Same format as for lunch. If you do not like the local food, we can recommend other restaurants such as Indian, Japanese and Italian where you can dine for a surcharge.

Note: Lunches and dinners provided are all set menus, with various dishes which are sure to please most.  However if you prefer a la carte this can be arranged for a small extra charge. The restaurants will be chosen by us using our knowledge and experience of them, to ensure quality and value, whether a set menu or a la carte.

Please let us know in advance if you require vegetarian or vegan meals so this can be arranged for you.  It will also help if you let us know if anyone in your group is allergic to any type of food.

Drinks are at your own expense with all meals.

4. TRANSPORT:
We use modern air-conditioned cars for 1-2 people and small comfortable vans for 3 -7 people. Modern A/C buses are used for groups of 10 or more.  All vehicles used by us are well-maintained and meet national safety regulations.  All of our drivers have 5 or more years’ experience, and always ensure a safe and comfortable ride for their passengers.

5. TOUR GUIDES:
All of our Tour Guides are University educated. They were born and raised in Vietnam, thereby having first-hand expert knowledge of their country. They are friendly, fun, and most of all they are flexible, allowing you to choose the pace of your tours.

They will meet you at the airport with your driver, deliver you to your hotel for check-in, and accompany you on all of your private tours. And, of course, speak your language!

6. WEATHER:

It’s normally cold (7 – 16 Degree Celsius with around 90% of humidity) in the North Vietnam from November until April so bring a (delete peace) light warm jacket with you if you travel within this time.

For the southern part of Vietnam, the heat can be a challenge from May to August. For the rest of the time the temperature does not change much. The rainy season makes it favorably cool for your adventure.

Sunblock, swimsuits and a light raincoat is advised all year round.

7. FLIGHTS:
International Flights: International flights are NOT included in our prices. You should buy return tickets from your home Country to Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos, according to your arrival/departure points, and your passport must be valid for 6 months after your arrival.

On Tour Domestic Flights: Domestic flights ARE included in the tour price, if internal flights are on your tour itinerary. We use Vietnam Airlines.

8. VISA & PASSPORTS:
Vietnam: For any booking of 10 days or more we will apply for a Visitor’s Visa, on your behalf, at no charge to you. However, you will still be required to the pay the visa stamp fees (USD 45 per person at time of writing) when picking up your Visa at the Airport upon arrival. Your passport must be valid for 6 months at the time of arrival.

Please note: Vietnam Visa on Arrival applies to air travel only. Those who check in at land border immigration checking points are requested to have your visa ready.

If there is a Vietnam Embassy or Consulate near where you live you can apply for a visa there.  You can also apply to the Vietnam Embassy online. Please ensure you apply for your visa well in advance of your trip.

9. INSURANCE:
Travel insurance is mandatory for all of our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that your policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. Travel agents and Airlines usually offer travel insurance, or will advise you where to obtain it.

When your trip is confirmed, we will request detailed insurance information from you for our files, which will also allow us to complete the necessary paperwork here in Vietnam.
