DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Saigon (D)
You will be met by your tour guide at Saigon’s Tan Son Nhat Airport and transferred to the Hotel to check-in. After that there will be free time until the tour briefing. This will be followed by the Welcome Dinner at a local Vietnamese restaurant.

Overnight in Saigon

Day 2: Saigon – Cu Chi Tunnels (B, L)

After breakfast we explore downtown Saigon (also widely known as Saigon) on cyclo (rickshaw) visiting the poignant War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, some classic French colonial architecture in the forms of Notre Dame Cathedral, the General Post Office and the municipal Theatre as well as one of the city’s main drags Dong Khoi Street ending up down by the Saigon River. We have a light lunch at the renowned Pho 2000 Restaurant (previous visitors include former US president Bill Clinton). This is followed by an afternoon trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, created by the Viet Cong to counter first the French and then American forces. We return to the hotel where the evening is free to explore Saigon’s vibrant nightlife.

Day 3: Saigon – Cai Be (B, L)

After breakfast we drive the 3 hours out of Saigon to Cai Be in the Mekong Delta. Here we experience a lively floating market where local people buy and sell their produce, mainly fruit and vegetables. After lunch we visit some cottage industries and learn how rice paper, coconut candy, rice popcorn and fish sauce are produced. In the late afternoon we return to dry land and return to Saigon.

Day 4: Saigon – Fly to Da Nang - Hoian (B, L)

After a breakfast we transfer to Tan Son Nhat airport for a short flight to Da Nang. From here we drive the short distance to our hotel in Hoian, stopping along the way at the Marble Mountains. After lunch we have a walking tour of Hoian’s ancient quarter including the Quan Cong Temple, a Chinese Assembly Hall, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Phung Hung ancestral house. The rest of the day is free to try your hand at shopping – Hoian is famed for its tailors where a whole new wardrobe can be purchased! The evening is free to wander the quiet streets and seek out one of the town’s many inviting restaurants.

Day 5: Hoian (B, D)

The morning in Hoian is free to shop, relax or explore further. In the late afternoon we will have a fun cooking class and enjoy the food we have prepared for dinner.

Day6: Hoian – Hue (B, L, D)

After breakfast we depart for Hue. This four hour journey by road takes us through some truly breathtaking scenery as we stop at China Beach (where US GIs used to unwind) and Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass with its stunning panoramic views before descending in to Lang Co beach for a coffee break. Upon arrival in Hue we will visit the Citadel and Forbidden Purple City and take a stroll around Dong Ba market. In the evening we will be treated to a memorable ten course Royal Banquet Dinner complete with local musicians. To add to the occasion our attire will be that of the Imperial court - Kings, Queens, Mandarins and royal ladies in waiting.

Day 7: Hue – Hanoi (B, L)

After breakfast we have a half day city tour beginning with a morning cruise on the Perfume River. Our first stop is at the Thien Mu (Heavenly Lady) Pagoda with its characteristic seven tiered tower, not to mention the Austin car which carried Monk Thich Quang Duc to Saigon where he famously set light to himself in 1963 as a dramatic protest against the unfair treatment of Buddhists by the Diem regime. We then drive a short distance to Emperor Tu Duc Mausoleum. This large mausoleum took only 3 years to construct and reflects a mix of Asian and European styles. A vegetarian lunch will be taken in a pagoda or a nunnery and then the remainder of the day is free. In the evening we transfer to the airport for the short flight to the nation’s capital Hanoi. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel.

Day8: Hanoi City tour (B, L)

Today we have a full day city tour. We commence at the Ho Chi Minh Complex and the former president’s mausoleum and his simple stilt house residence as well as the One Pillar Pagoda. We continue on to the Temple of Literature, site of Vietnam’s first university and now a temple dedicated to Confucius, followed by the fascinating Museum of Ethnology. Our lunch will be at KOTO (which stands for Know One Teach One) where the staff are former street children now being trained in cookery and hospitality. In the afternoon we weave through Hanoi’s Old Quarter on cyclos and in the evening watch a traditional water puppet show.

Day 9: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D)

Enjoy a relaxing day trip to majestic Halong Bay. Our journey through the rice paddies of the Red River Delta takes around 3 ½ hours. En route we stops at a charity centre run by and for the handicapped - the Hong Ngoc Charity center. Upon arrival at the quay side we board our vessel, a luxury traditional junk and begin our cruise through Halong Bay with a delicious seafood lunch. The boat ventures deeper in to the vast bay with breath-taking limestone outcrops and emerald-green waters. We stop at one the bay’s most well known caves. Later there is a steep climb up Titop Mountain where we are rewarded with some stunning panoramic views of Halong Bay. We have dinner and spend the night on board.

Day 10: Halong Bay – Hanoi (B, D)

Wake early for a memorable sunrise over the bay and take a simple breakfast on board. This is followed with the opportunity of kayaking on the bay’s placid waters to gain access to some of the sites not accessible by the larger boats including another cave. We return to our boat for a refreshing lunch before returning to the harbor and our awaiting bus which will return us to Hanoi. We make a stop at the village of Dong Trieu which specializes in ceramics. Our farewell dinner tonight with our tour guide will be in a local restaurant in the capital.

Day 11: Depart Hanoi (B)

Breakfast at the hotel and it’s our free time until we transfer to Noi Bai Airport for our flight home.
